The subject of AQUA is Australia’s Great Barrier Reef (GBR). This is one of the World’s most treasured icons. It’s also one of the greatest ecosystems on earth; the only natural structure visible from the moon. Its coral kingdoms support some of the planet’s most diverse, and exotic, marine animals and plants. The GBR is listed under all four natural World Heritage criteria for its outstanding universal value. But this mighty kingdom is dying. Due mostly to climate change, already 70% of reefs worldwide are dead or dying. And at the current rate of Co2 emissions, many scientists believe that the Great Barrier Reef will perish by 2050...perhaps even earlier. Its story – in its entirety, and suiting a modern, multi-media audience – has to be told, and told quickly. Endorsed by the Australian Marine Conservation Society – the organisation most active in researching and protecting the Reef – AQUA aims to not only celebrate the beauty of the reef, but alert audiences worldwide to its plight.
